Look at the crowds of water-gazers there. Circumambulate the city of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon...What do you see? Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries. Some leaning against the spiles; some seated upon the pier-heads; some high aloft in the rigging, as if striving to get a still better seaward peep. But these are all landsmen; of week days pent up in lath and plaster--tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks. How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here?
Nothing will content them but the extremest limit of the land...

Guardate la folla dei contemplatori dell’acqua.
Andate in giro per la città in un sognante pomeriggio del Sabato. Che cosa vedete? Fissi, come le sentinelle silenziose, tutto intorno alla città, stanno migliaia e migliaia di mortali perduti in fantasticherie oceaniche. Alcuni appoggiati a una palizzata, altri seduti sulle testate dei moli, altri che guardano oltre le murate di navi, a altri come se si sforzassero di gettare un’occhiata ancor più vasta, verso il mare. Ma tutti costoro son gente di terra; rinchiusi, nei giorni feriali, negli steccati, legati ai banchi, inchiodati ai sedili, avvinti alle scrivanie. Come va dunque? Sono scomparse tutte le verdi campagna? Che cosa fanno qui costoro?
Nulla li soddisfa, se non il limite estremo della terraferma...
